10 Important Tips For Living A Healthy Lifestyle
1. Exercise
Like it or not, the key to healthy living is exercise. The experts may say “Try to fit in, around 150 minutes of aerobic activity or 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity every week”….
Easy for experts to say. ‘Not so easy in the real world.
Start with steps. Use the bottom step of your stairs at home or a low, sturdy stool. Gradually increase your routine to walking upstairs. Later, if you’re up to it, you can start walking briskly upstairs and down. Choose enjoyable activities such as walking, swimming, or cycling. If you have a dog then take the dog for a walk every morning.
2. Eat A Healthy Diet
What you eat plays such an important part in a healthy lifestyle. It is well known that certain countries have benefitted with increased longevity due to their particular diets.
The Mediterranean diet is probably responsible for the Italians having an average lifespan of nearly 83 years while the Japanese with their high fish diet enjoy an average life expectancy of 84.5 years. Prioritize foods like fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, whole grains, and healthy fats. Use your plate like a pie graph, fill half your plate with veggies, a quarter with protein, and a quarter with carbohydrates.
3. Drink Plenty Of Fluids
Drink water consistently throughout the day. Aim for 8 glasses (about 70 ounces or 2 liters). In warm weather, carry a water bottle with you. Remember, many, if not most, carbonated drinks contain unhealthy amounts of sugar. Avoid them.
4. Sleep is so important.
Sleep is the time your body goes into self-repair mode. A healthy 8 hours of sleep each night, give or take an hour, should be your goal. Try to stick to a sleep schedule. Create a calming bedtime routine. Don’t get upset if you cannot sleep sometimes, read a book or magazine. Rest is what your body requires.
5. Learn How To Handle Stress
Practice stress-relieving activities like meditation, deep breathing exercises, or yoga. Dedicate some time for your hobbies and activities that make you happy. Seek support, from a therapist if stress starts feeling overwhelming.
6. The Food You Eat
There is little doubt that, at this present time, processed foods contain too much added, preservatives, nutrients, flavors, salts, sugars, or fats., so the partial answer must be to cut down on processed foods. Nobody is saying do not eat processed food, just to reduce the reliance on it. Eat more natural foods. Fruit, vegetables, fresh or unprocessed meats.
7. Practice good hygiene
Wash hands regularly, especially before eating and after using the bathroom. Remember, if you are cooking, keep cooked foods separate from uncooked meats in particular. Wash chopping boards in between preparing uncooked foods and cooked food or salads.
8. Stay Connected to Your Family And Friends
Make time for family and friends, they are important to a well-balanced lifestyle. In their absence, join clubs or groups related to your interests. Volunteer in your community to meet new people, it will contribute to your well-being.
9. Your Good Health Is Paramount
Schedule regular physical checkups. Don’t ignore persistent problems – consult your doctor when needed. If you’re on medications keep to the prescribed instructions.
10. Limit alcohol and avoid smoking
If you drink alcoholic beverages, do so in moderation, (up to 1 drink per day for women, 2 for men). They say that part of the success of the Mediterranean diet is the red wine they drink with meals. The best course of action is abstinence.

DON’T
– talk to your doctor about methods for quitting. There used to be medication that helped you getting over that first hurdle.
For those that do not smoke, avoid secondhand smoke.
